Overlanding / Traveling

Entirely about the journey:

There is something about the open road the beckons the explorer in all of us.  To grab a few essentials and our vehicle to head out into the unknown in search of something that we have yet to fully comprehend.  It’s this natural Drive that has propelled me on many of my photography travels.

I got a relatively late start in my travels.  I was already 29 by the time I took my first solo trip out West for an extended weekend.  The trip was hastily planned and while it did yield some fine images, the travels didn’t come close to meeting my expectations.  Yet it planted a seed that has grown over the past 10+ years to form the traveler I’ve become today.

It’s my goal on this section of my site to share the methods to my travels.  Both the positives and the negatives of overlanding as well as a little insight into how the experience can enlighten your photographic vision and overall life.

Please keep in mind that while I have traveled solo, with family members and with my business partner; I don’t have children so traveling with kids is something I can’t comment on nor recommend.

The images above provide a mere taste of the adventures my overlanding travels provide.  From gorgeous views along desolate trails to equally desolate roads climbing high into the mountains in the middle of the night.  These are experiences that are hard to come by if you travel by air.

THE AFTER PARTY

1

upload & Sort

All images need to be uploaded to my digital studio for sorting and rough processing.

2

Post Process

The roughly top 10% of images make it to in-depth post processing.  This is where the magic happens and epic art is created.

3

Prepare for production

One of the most labor intensive processes takes the top 1-3% of images and makes them ready for production.  These are the images that are made available to my collectors around the globe.

The Journey Thus Far

2014-2023

The image to the right shows a non-exclusive track of my travels thus far.  Unfortunately my Garmin Inreach has proven a bit less than reliable at times.  So these tracks are non-exhaustive.

Where next?

Planned Travels:

Nevada / SW Utah 7/25 - 7/30

Wyoming 8/22 - 8/27 (Possibly delayed)

Future Trips TBD

7-8 week road-trip covering most of the West from South Dakota to Washington before heading down through California and then across New Mexico and Arizona.

Absolute Rules

Safety Always

Remote areas are unforgiving and minor injuries in the city can be fatal in the back country.

All or Nothing

Everyone must agree to the plan or it doesn’t happen.  The group thought process is critical to good judgment in the outdoors and no one should be forced into an uncomfortable situation..

Plan / Prepare

Proper planning and preparation go a long ways towards a successful journey.

The highlights of overlanding travel

1

Epic experiences

Just getting out onto the open road creates experiences that are hard to match with other means of travel.

2

True Darkness

To experience true “pitch black” darkness is something foreign for many people.  Especially us urban dwelling travelers.

3

Camp life

The true camping lifestyle is something unique in and of itself.  Wether it’s the peace and quiet of an isolated site; or the late night socializing around the campfire.  There’s a little something for everyone when it comes to camping.

4

The photographic opportunities

I have captured so many amazing images along the drives between the primary destinations. Many of which I would of never seen had I been flying for my travels

The challenges of overlanding travel

1

Driving has risks

There’s a reason why getting behind the wheel is one of the most dangerous things people do regularly.  Everyone is one crash away from having a really bad day.

2

The cost

It’s not just the wildlife that can eat into your wallet.  The cost of fuel and wear and tear on one’s vehicle can cut deep into one’s bank account over time

3

True cross country driving

Actual cross country travel is rarely enjoyable. Especially hours upon hours of traveling through nothing but farm fields.  (I’m looking at you Nebraska.)  The sixteen or so hour push from Chicago to Rocky Mountain National Park has taken at least a year off my life.

P.S I’m kidding Nebraska.  We’d all be starving and or walking everywhere.

4

Other employment

Having to fight for the time off from one’s work can take a real toll on the excitement of planning an epic road trip.  Turns out the majority of employers don’t particularly care for extended travels.
